@Mickeybern the people have spoken,

In all fairness FreeBird, it would be very difficult for anyone other than an SJR alum to take the Green Knights on Saturday. BC has lost 2 games in state in the last 4 years and have been ranked in the Top 25 in the country the last 3. SJR hasn't beaten Bergen since 2019, so any out of state poster can't in good conscience take SJR. That said, I'm beginning to believe an upset here is a very good possibility. Just got a feeling that Bergen is in the same spot mentally that they were in against Bosco last year. Don't know why but I just have this incline, that Bergen is getting cocky. This is a huge game for playoff seeding which most people are not paying attention to, if BC wins they for all tense & purposes lock up the #1 seed. That would relegate SJR to the bottom half of the bracket & most likely have to play Delbarton in the semis, with the October 28th matchup against the Green Wave being used for the #2 slot. If SJR wins then Bergen will have a fight on their hands to make the finals. Everyone in my opinion is sleeping on the Green Wave! They have big physical lines and are very well coached, they are definitely legit!

I’ll go on record and say Grusser has the potential to be the the best QB at joes in more then a decade, his awareness iniside the pocket is insane, if we can block we win , The game is depending on how good Bergens Dline is, and limit porter as much as possible, Jaimir Joseph vs Porter and Willis vs kinsler is gonna be 🔥

It’s the game we’ve all been waiting for.

NJ.com’s No. 1 team in Bergen Catholic is set to host No. 2 St. Joseph (Mont.) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at “The Jack” in Oradell.

The two sides for one of the best rivalries in the state and typically it’s one of N.J.’s most appetizing matchups every year.

Saturday’s forecast calls for wet weather. The last time it rained while these two were on the field, the Green Knights blanked the Crusaders at MetLife Stadium in the 2019 Non-Public, Group 4 championship.

What are both coaches thinking ahead of this one? We can for sure say the respect level is high.

“We’ve certainly had some battles, there’s no doubt about that,” Bergen Catholic head coach Vito Campanile said of St. Joseph head coach Dan Marangi. “Even going back to the Seton Hall Prep days, we had some great matchups when he was at Don Bosco. It’s beyond words – I have a ton of respect for him and the person he is. There’s been an evolution in what they do offensively from what they were. They’re really good at playing fast. They’re a play in space kind of team. Their athletic ability jumps off the screen and they have dynamic playmakers.”

“They execute. They do what they are coached to do,” St. Joe’s coach Dan Marangi said. “They do the little things right. They’re the team that’s won back-to-back state championships, and there’s a reason for it. They believe in what they do and they execute it. The rivalry between the three schools (including Don Bosco Prep), it’s heated but I think there’s also a level of respect there. We’re always trying to compete with each other. We believe that we’re the best and I think it’s a good healthy rivalry.”

Below, find our preview for Saturday’s big tilt.

Players to watch

Bergen Catholic

Dominic Campanile, Jr., QB | Player profile

Campanile has a season stat line of 1,120 yards, 16 touchdowns and three interceptions on 72-of-118 passing. He also has 17 yards and a score rushing on 13 attempts.

Nyier Daniels, Sr., OL | Player profile

The Georgia commit missed a chunk of the year due to a leg injury, but he’s back at left tackle paving huge running lanes and protecting Campanile. Daniels is a four-star recruit and stands at a massive 6-8, 315-pound frame.

Christian Gonzalez, Sr., LB | Player profile

Gonzalez has registered 38 tackles (11 solo), one tackle for loss and an interception on the year. He notched a season-high 12 tackles in the Crusaders’ Week 1 win over Red Bank Catholic.

Kaden Irby-Mason, Jr., RB/LB | Player profile

Irby-Mason plays both ways for the Cruaders, but mostly at linebacker. He has generated 36 tackles (15 solo), five tackles for loss and three sacks to go with five carries for 42 yards this fall.

Elijah Kinsler, Sr., DL | Player profile

The West Virginia pledge is one of the most disruptive defensive linemen in the state. Kinsler has recorded 31 tackles (12 solo), 3.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks through six games.

Anthony Morales, Sr., DL | Player profile

Morales’s speed makes him a matchup nightmare for offensive lines. He has an impressive season stat sheet that includes 18 tackles (nine solo), nine tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Naiim Parrish, Jr., WR/DB | Player profile

This prized recruit is always a threat to take the ball away while also making his mark on offense and special teams. Defensively, he has racked up 25 tackles (19 solo), two interceptions, one tackle for loss and a fumble recovery this season to pair with five receptions for 67 yards at wideout.

Quincy Porter, Jr., WR | Player profile

No one in the state has done it better at the wide receiver position than Porter has since the second half of the 2022 campaign. The nationally-coveted prospect has 26-538-11 line this season and a freakish 52-1,053-20 total in his last 13 games.

Kaj Sanders, Sr., RB/DB | Player profile

The Rutgers-bound senior is this team’s best two-way player. He has 26 tackles (nine solo) and a half tackle for loss from the secondary along with 49 carries for 369 yards and six touchdowns and two catches for 18 yards at running back.

Jordan Thomas, So., WR/DB | Player profile

It’s hard to believe this four-star recruit is only a sophomore. Thomas has compiled 29 tackles (20 solo), three interceptions and 2.5 tackles for loss while producing one of Bergen Catholic’s longest plays from scrimmage this fall – a 65-yard catch in a win over Seton Hall Prep.

St. Joseph

Ricky Anastasi, Sr., LB | Player profile

The leader of St. Joe’s defense, Anastasi is a cerebral linebacker, who recently returned to the lineup after missing two games. He has 30 tackles, including three for loss, and is coming off a season-high 13 tackles in a win over Donovan Catholic.

Nate Bailey, So., WR | Player profile

A dynamic and young receiver, Bailey has emerged as the Green Knights’ top receiver on a stacked group. Bailey has 26 receptions for a team-leading 410 yards and two touchdowns.

Spencer Davila, Sr., DB | Player profile

Davila is a physical player who can line up in the slot or in the box as an extra linebacker. He has 24 tackles this season and is tied for second on the team with five tackles for loss.

Ramin Farzaie, Sr., DL | Player profile

Farzaie, who transferred from Somerville, has made an impact along the defensive line in his short time so far with St. Joe’s. He has a team-leading three sacks to go along a team-high six tackles for loss.

John Forster, Jr., RB | Player profile

Forster is as explosive as they come once he has the ball in his hands. The definition of a home-run threat, Forster also recently returned from injury and can line up in multiple spots along the offense.

Patrick Grusser, Sr., QB | Player profile

Grusser has been fabulous this season after transferring in from DePaul. The senior signal caller is doing it both with his arm and legs, throwing for 1,266 yards and nine touchdowns, while rushing for 278 yards and five more touchdowns.

Jahmir Joseph, Jr., CB | Player profile

One of the top cornerbacks in the state, Joseph has the ability to shut down one side of the field. He has 29 tackles and is tied for the team lead with two interceptions and has a forced a team-leading four fumbles. It will be interesting to see how he matches up against Porter on Saturday.

Terrance Sumter, Sr., RB | Player profile

Sumter gives the St. Joe’s backfield another dynamic player, along with Forster and Yasin Willis. Sumter is second on the Green Knights with 373 yards and six touchdowns.

Jovon Williams, Jr., WR | Player profile

Another threat with the ball in his hands, Williams leads the Green Knights with 27 catches. He has four games where he’s hauled in at least five passes and is second on the team with 367 receiving yards and has two touchdowns.

Yasin Willis, Sr., RB | Player profile

Arguably the top running back in the state, Willis is big back with the ability to run away from defenses. He earns the tough yards between the tackles and can get on the perimeter and hurt defenses. Willis has a team-leading 486 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

Keys to victory

Bergen Catholic wins if: Its defense can get off the field. Where the Crusaders could get in trouble is if this game becomes a shootout. St. Joseph has gone for 34-plus points in five of its six games. The Green Knights have been good for 40-plus in four contests. The lone game under 34 points was their Week 2 win over Don Bosco Prep, which was completed in only three quarters of action. What’s the point I’m trying to make here? This St. Joseph offense is talented and can rack up points quickly. It’s their style. The Green Knights also take care of the football. Senior quarterback Patrick Grusser has a mere two interceptions on the season and the rest of the team has only fumbled twice. If that trend is going to continue, Bergen Catholic’s defense will have to play well on early downs and get third-down stops. Defensive coordinator Tony DeBellis’s group has been strong this year with just 39 points allowed aside from the loss to Chaminade-Madonna (FL). His unit can’t afford to crack on Saturday. -- Ryan Patti

St. Joseph wins if: It can score first and play from ahead. Falling behind and giving confidence to Bergen Catholic’s offense and defense is typically a disaster for opponents. The last in-state team that did score first on Bergen Catholic was Delbarton last season during the Non-Public A semifinals, but Delbarton wasn’t able to sustain it for four quarters. St. Joe’s has to find a way with it’s prolific offense to open the scoring on Saturday and play from ahead. If it doesn’t, then the defense can’t allow Bergen Catholic to go up two scores since it’s going to be extremely difficult to rally from that sort of deficit. St. Joe’s offense, led by Grusser, Willis and Co., has the the ability to score points in bunches and might have to do on Saturday against a physical Bergen Catholic defense. -- Luis Torres
