DevilDog
New starting quarterbacks off to hot starts for several Dallas-area schools Freshman Hayes Hackney didn’t have much time to prepare for being the starting quarterback at Prosper Walnut Grove, a school in its second year of existence. Hackney spent a lot of his summer playing select baseball, then had to go through a quarterback competition during fall practices and didn’t learn that he would be the starter until after his team’s second scrimmage. That was a week before the season opener against Carrollton Newman Smith. Despite running a complex spread offense, Hackney looked like a seasoned veteran, throwing for 323 yards and four touchdowns on 17-of-24 passing in a 63-28 win. It was the most points Walnut Grove has ever scored after playing an outlaw schedule last year when it wasn’t in a UIL district. “It was pretty nerve-wracking, but I was pretty excited to get out there and just perform in front of a big crowd,” Hackney said. “In eighth grade we ran the offense that we run this year, so I had a good understanding of what we’re going to run, and I just worked on it all summer to get used to it.” Hackney wasn’t an anomaly. Of the 20 players who ranked in the top 10 in the Dallas area in passing yards in Class 6A and 5A in Week 1, nine of those are new starting quarterbacks for their team in 2024. That list was topped by Forney four-star junior Nelson Peterson Jr., a transfer from Sunnyvale who threw for 356 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-30 win over Lake Highlands. Frisco Lone Star’s Karece Hoyt was the backup quarterback last season, when he also played running back and wide receiver, but he threw for 307 yards and accounted for three touchdowns in last week’s 24-17 win over Argyle, ranked No. 3 in the state in 5A Division II at the time. Grant Bizjack learned the varsity game while backing up 3,000-yard passer and District 4-6A MVP Tom Von Grote during Trophy Club Byron Nelson’s first unbeaten regular season last year, when it made the deepest playoff run in school history by reaching the Class 6A Division II Region I final. Bizjack threw only 25 passes for the varsity last year, but the senior made a dazzling debut last week by passing for 348 yards and accounting for five touchdowns (four passing) in a 48-46 win over Wolfforth Frenship. With middle school feeder systems that run the same offense as the high school varsity, quarterbacks learn the ins and outs of intricate game plans long before their first matchup under the Friday night lights. College camps, such as the ones Jacob Janecek attended at Stephen F. Austin, UT-Permian Basin and Texas State, helped the Lovejoy junior prepare for his first varsity start last week. Janecek threw five touchdown passes, ran for a score and accounted for 346 yards of total offense in a 46-43 loss to Lubbock Cooper. He threw only 15 passes on the varsity last year while backing up 3,000-yard passer Alexander Franklin on a regional finalist team, but Janecek is now coached by seven-time state champion Todd Dodge, who came out of retirement to coach Lovejoy this season. “I was kind of shocked that he was coming out of retirement to come coach, but I was super excited, knowing that he is a quarterback coach and he is a legend,” Janecek said. “He has taught me a lot ... how to take apart defenses. He has gotten my footwork a lot better, my drops, and being on time to receivers.” While leading Southlake Carroll to four state championships and a 79-1 record from 2002 to 2006, Dodge coached elite quarterbacks Chase Wasson (threw for 4,822 yards in 2002), Chase Daniel (played in the NFL from 2010 to 2022), Greg McElroy (played one season in the NFL) and his son Riley Dodge, a Parade All-American and the 2006 MaxPreps national player of the year. Todd Dodge’s 2020 and 2021 Austin Westlake state championship teams were quarterbacked by state No. 1 recruit Cade Klubnik, a five-star All-American who is now the starter at Clemson. Dodge has passed on the knowledge he shared with those phenoms to Janecek, who ran track for the first time last spring to improve his speed. He also took part in a camp run by Dodge this summer and spent countless hours studying film and throwing to his receivers during the offseason. That had him well-prepared to run Dodge’s new-look spread offense this fall. “He changed about 99% of it,” Janecek said. “He brought all of his philosophies and his offensive coordinator, and they came and changed the way we ran stuff. It was for the good. He has changed a lot of our concepts to be able to beat different defenses, and he is a very creative offensive mind.” Waxahachie averaged just 82.8 passing yards per game during a 9-3 season in 2023, and its quarterbacks combined for only nine touchdown passes all season. The offense could look drastically different this year with newcomer Jerry Meyer III at quarterback, as he replaces dual-threat Ramon McKinney Jr., who ran for more yards (960) than he threw for (917) last year. Meyer moved to Waxahachie after breaking the Nevada state record for most touchdown passes in a season, throwing 58 in 11 games as a freshman while leading Lake Mead Academy to the Class 2A state title. The 6-0, 170-pound Meyer threw for 2,711 yards last year while completing 67% of his passes, and he already lists college offers from Baylor, Purdue, SMU, TCU, Texas Tech and Washington State, among others. Meyer threw for 268 yards and a touchdown in his Waxahachie debut last week, a 42-14 win over rival Ennis that gave Waxahachie a 51-50-2 lead in the all-time series. Meyer took part in spring ball with Waxahachie, giving him a head start on learning the offense. The fact that he comes in with extraordinary varsity experience will be vital as he plays in District 11-6A, which includes nationally ranked and defending state champions DeSoto and Duncanville. The “District of Doom” also features 21 of the top 100 recruits in the Dallas area in the Class of 2025. “He is 16 years old as a sophomore. He is older in his grade,” Waxahachie coach Shane Tolleson said of Meyer. “He has played in big venues before, and he has played against quality opponents. That puts him ahead of the game. He is very mature for his age, he has an elite mind, and he approaches Friday night like a professional.”

Champa
Lewisville RB is pretty nice. That was a bad kickoff and pathetic defense towards the end of the half after they scored a TD though. 14 - 12 Lewisville up.

Not enough faith in the passing game to beat the Duncanville, Desoto, or Southlake Carrolls of the world.
